Volunteer Now for the 2008 Great Truckee Meadows Community Cleanup

Mother Earth is looking for volunteers to help clear tons of trash from outdoor recreation areas during the Great Truckee Meadows Community Cleanup on Saturday, May 10.

All volunteers receive a souvenir water bottle, donuts from Krispy Kreme before the cleanup, and a thank-you lunch provided by Scolari's and Pepsi immediately following the cleanup at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park's Chinese Pagoda.

Last year, volunteers removed over 140 tons of trash from a variety of areas throughout the Truckee Meadows. More work needs to be done and Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful has partnered with Washoe County, the cities of Reno and Sparks, Reno-Sparks Indian Colony, U.S. Forest Service, BLM, Waste Management and other local organizations to target areas from Cold Springs to Washoe Lake.

Volunteers may sign-up and choose a location by visiting the Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful website at www.ktmb.org or call (775) 851-5185.

SNAKES, BUGS and other BACKYARD MONSTERS NOW OPEN

Get a bug's eye view of the world through June 15 at the Wilbur May Museum

See just how big the world can be in your own backyard at the Snakes, Bugs, and other Backyard Monsters live nature exhibit opening March 8 at the Wilbur D. May Museum in Rancho San Rafael Regional Park.

Visitors will need to think like a bug and act like a bug as they see what the world looks like through a bug's eye with help from a 12-foot animatronic praying mantis, giant scorpion, dragonfly and dueling Carpenter Ants. The exhibit also includes displays of exotic insects from around the world, terrariums full of live bugs, and hands-on activities such as the "Robo-bug,", "Bugs-Eye View" and "The Better to Eat You With" that give insight into how insects live, eat, fly and see.

Live Snake Room: Animal handler Mace Loftus of Animals for Art returns to the museum for this exhibit, helping to introduce visitors to a variety of live snakes and share his knowledge and insights about their world.

Snakes, Bugs, and other Backyard Monsters will be on display at the May Museum from March 8 through June 15. Exhibit hours are 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and 12 noon to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. The museum will be open Tuesday through Sunday in May and June. General admission is $7.00 for adults, $6.00 for children 18 and under, and $5.00 per person for groups of 20 or more. For additional information, call (775) 785-5961.
